London Bridge: Much more than a children's song

But beyond the rhyme, London Bridge It's one of the city's most historic and fascinating places. That's why we've included it as an essential stop on our new tour. 1. From Rome to today: a bridge with a thousand lives
The first London Bridge was built by the Romans in 50 AD It was made of wood, rudimentary, but functional. It has since been rebuilt in stone, renovated, destroyed, sold, and exported (yes, even that). Today, the Modern London Bridge dates from 1973, but it rests on centuries of legacy.
2. The bridge that was sold (to the United States!)
In 1968, the old 19th century bridge was dismantled stone by stone and sold to an American businessman, Robert McCulloch. He rebuilt it in Lake Havasu City, Arizona. Urban legend says that he thought he was buying the Tower BridgeReality or not, London Bridge has found a new home under the American sun.
3. A medieval floating street
During the Middle Ages, London Bridge was covered with houses and shopsIt even had its own chapel dedicated to Saint Thomas Becket. It was a floating market… and also a gallery of horrors: traitors' heads were mounted on spikes as a warning. It was all very decorative, in a medieval style.
4. Legends, fire and songs
The bridge has survived fires, floods, the Black Death, and Viking attacks. It has been featured in songs, films, and historical novels. And although many tourists mistake it for the most picturesque Tower Bridge, London Bridge remains the original bridge, witness to the evolution of the city.
