When we think about\u00a0Spain in Shakespeare's universe<\/strong>It's easy to imagine that he doesn't have much of a role to play. After all, the Bard of Avon tells us about melancholic Danish kings, passionate Italian lovers, and enchanted forests populated by fairies. But what about Spain?<\/p>

Did it have a place in Shakespeare's universe? Do our lands, our characters, or even our reputations appear in his works?<\/p>

The short answer: yes.
The long answer: yes, but in more subtle, symbolic, or even comical ways than you might expect.<\/p>

In this article, we explore how it sneaks in\u00a0Spain in Shakespeare's universe<\/strong>, from exotic accents to imperial references, theatrical caricatures and unexpected literary connections.<\/p>

"Spanish" as an exotic accent or comic relief<\/h3>

\u201cHe hath the heart of a lion, and the tongue of a Castilian.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>

\u201cHe has the heart of a lion and the tongue of a Castilian.\u201d<\/p>

Here, "Castilian" doesn't just mean speaking Spanish, but doing so with a haughty and elegant tone. In the 16th century, this had clear connotations: Spaniards were perceived as courteous, but also conceited and overly formal.<\/p>

Another example of how\u00a0Spain in Shakespeare's universe<\/strong>\u00a0appears as a symbol of power\u2026 and ego.<\/p>

Spaniards as symbolic antagonists: the shadow of the Empire<\/h3>

Although Shakespeare avoids direct references to the war between England and Spain (including the Spanish Armada of 1588), the political climate of the time subtly filters into his plays.<\/p>

In\u00a0Henry V<\/em>For example, there is a constant rivalry between languages and cultures: English, French, Latin... Spanish is not mentioned directly, but the tension between Catholic and Protestant European monarchies lies in the background.<\/p>

Many scholars believe that characters such as\u00a0Don Adriano de Armado<\/strong>\u00a0in\u00a0Love's Labour's Lost<\/em>\u00a0They are caricatures of the Spanish nobleman, with his grandiloquent way of speaking and his exaggerated romanticism.<\/p>

Don Armado describes himself as "a fantastic soldier," and his speech is riddled with exaggerations and Latinisms. It is probably the clearest and most ridiculous Spanish in the entire Shakespearean canon.<\/p>

And what about Don Quixote?<\/h3>

Although Shakespeare never directly adapted Cervantes, there is a curious indirect connection: in 1613,\u00a0John Fletcher<\/strong>, an occasional collaborator of Shakespeare, wrote a play called\u00a0The History of Cardenio<\/em>, based on a subplot of\u00a0Don Quixote<\/em>.<\/p>

There is debate about whether Shakespeare participated in its writing. Researchers such as\u00a0Stephen Greenblatt<\/strong>,\u00a0James Shapiro<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Jonathan Bate<\/strong>\u00a0They have analyzed how the political and cultural context of Elizabethan England influenced Shakespeare's work. And although Spain doesn't occupy a central place, its presence is constant in the background.<\/p>
