Some large corporations made their fortunes by collaborating with the Nazi regime. Did you know that your favorite car brand may have worked for Hitler? It's not a joke, even though it sounds like something out of a movie. And no, that information isn't in the brochure when you buy one.<\/p>\n

Here we review the most shady deals between businesses and Nazis, the widespread use of slave labor, and how these stories still weigh heavily on the image of many brands. And, along the way, some surprising facts that will leave you speechless.<\/p>\n

1. Brands that collaborated with the Nazis: from financiers to beneficiaries<\/h2>\n

Adolf Hitler's rise to power wasn't solely due to a strange mustache and fiery speeches. It also relied on the money of major industrialists. In February 1933, a group of businessmen met with him and contributed millions of marks to the Nazi election campaign, with IG Farben, the German chemical giant, being one of the largest donors.<\/p>\n

During the war, IG Farben built a huge factory next to Auschwitz, in Monowitz, where thousands of camp prisoners worked in slave-like conditions. It was also a co-owner of Degesch, the company that marketed Zyklon B, the gas used in the extermination camps to murder more than a million people, mostly Jews.<\/p>\n

And then there's Volkswagen. Did you know that the famous Beetle was born as a project of the Nazi regime, the "people's car"? During the war, it was barely manufactured for the civilian population: the factory was dedicated to producing military vehicles, and for this, it relied massively on forced labor.<\/p>\n

2. Mass exploitation of slave labor<\/h2>\n

If you thought these companies simply manufactured products, think again. Many used forced labor. From Siemens to Daimler-Benz (Mercedes), numerous companies exploited prisoners of war, deportees from occupied countries, and concentration camp inmates, including thousands of Jews. Siemens, for example, even built a plant in Bobrek, a subcamp of Auschwitz, in 1943.<\/p>\n

Hugo Boss is another well-known case, although with an important distinction. It is often said that he designed the SS uniforms, but this is not true: they were designed by Karl Diebitsch and Walter Heck. What his company did do was manufacture them, along with other party uniforms. Hugo Ferdinand Boss had joined the Nazi party in 1931, and some 140 forced laborers, mostly women, and 40 French prisoners of war worked at his factory in Metzingen.<\/p>\n

3. How do brands that collaborated with the Nazis deal with their past today?<\/h2>\n

Some have stepped forward. In 1998, Volkswagen announced a fund to compensate those who had been forced to work in its factories. And in 2000, the German government and numerous companies created the "Memory, Responsibility and Future" foundation, which has paid compensation to more than 1.6 million people in nearly 100 countries. In 2011, Hugo Boss publicly apologized after commissioning a independent study on its history<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But the question remains: is it enough? Many of the forced laborers had already died by the time the compensation arrived. Today you can drive a German car or wear a designer suit and feel like a boss, but behind the glitz lies a story that isn't in the instruction manual.<\/p>\n

4. Interesting facts: Fanta, the soft drink that was born in the middle of the war<\/h2>\n

And here's a little-known fact: Fanta was invented in Nazi Germany. With the war, Coca-Cola's German subsidiary stopped receiving the ingredients to make its soft drink. So, around 1940, its director, Max Keith, created a beverage using whatever he had on hand, such as whey and pressed fruit scraps. That's how Fanta was born. 5. Final reflections: the dark side of capitalism<\/h2>\n

Capitalism can be an engine of progress, but this episode reminds us that it has sometimes also been complicit in horror. Companies we now consider models of success, such as BMW and Porsche, also resorted to forced labor during World War II, and the list of brands that collaborated with the Nazis is longer than it seems. And although many have tried to repair the damage and their image, the shadow of their past remains.<\/p>\n
